That Book Woman by Heather Henson

This is the story of a boy named Cal who lives way high up in the Appalachian mountains, during the 1930's. At that time there were no schools or libraries available to him. Cal is very helpful with the chores, but his sister, Lark, just sits around reading most of the time. Cal cannot read and has a hard time understanding the value of those "chicken scratches." That book woman shows up on horesback about every two weeks with books for Lark, but why?

A New Book from an Old Friend

A long-time favorite author has written a new book. Mouse Island by Eve Bunting tells about a mouse who lives alone on an island. Life is pretty good for him, but he longs for something. He is not even sure what that something is. The nice illustrations give us a good idea of what life on an island might be like.

A Funny One!

Never Take a Shark to the Dentist (and other things not to do)

by Judy Barrett

This one really made me chuckle. Each page has bit of advice and a very funny illustration. Take your time when you read it, so you can enjoy the humor.

Welcome!

I am fortunate enough to have a chance to touch, look through, and read hundreds of children's books. My plan is to share some of them with you. Of course, you have access to information on our entire collection by clicking on IPAC, either at Elizabeth Ide or outside Elizabeth Ide. Please help yourselves.

To start the ball rolling:

Thesaurus Rex
by Laya Steinberg
428.1 STE
This book has a fun presentation of synonyms and antonyms for primary grade children. Even the title is a play on words. The story follows Thesaurus Rex, a lovable dinosaur, through his day. A word of caution! Not all the words are strictly synonyms or antonyms. Perhaps, this makes the book even more worthy of discussion.
