This is the story of a boy named Cal who lives way high up in the Appalachian mountains, during the 1930's. At that time there were no schools or libraries available to him. Cal is very helpful with the chores, but his sister, Lark, just sits around reading most of the time. Cal cannot read and has a hard time understanding the value of those "chicken scratches." That book woman shows up on horesback about every two weeks with books for Lark, but why?

A New Book from an Old Friend

A long-time favorite author has written a new book. Mouse Island by Eve Bunting tells about a mouse who lives alone on an island. Life is pretty good for him, but he longs for something. He is not even sure what that something is. The nice illustrations give us a good idea of what life on an island might be like.

The Great Fuzz Frenzy

This book is a nominee for the Monarch Book Award for 2009. When Violet, the dog, drops a fuzzy tennis ball into the underground prairie-dog town, a whole lot of trouble starts. The prairie-dogs are all fascinated by the fuzz and want it for themselves. Selfishness prevails, but in the end teamwork helps a lot.

This book has a fun presentation of synonyms and antonyms for primary grade children. Even the title is a play on words. The story follows Thesaurus Rex, a lovable dinosaur, through his day. A word of caution! Not all the words are strictly synonyms or antonyms. Perhaps, this makes the book even more worthy of discussion.
